I can’t help thinking about the importance of having an open, exploratory, but consistent political and intellectual project.

As of 2010, the District of Columbia had the highest rate of African Americans living with HIV in the US. African-American AIDS activists and public health observers frequently compare HIV prevalence in black America to that in sub-Saharan Africa. Such comparisons highlight the virus's devastation of black communities in the United States while flattening important historical differences.
